Isi artikelThe arts subject is included in the 2004 Competence-based Curriculum for elementary school level. The researchers conducted a study on the teachers' ways of promoting students' creativity in the teaching arts, in the topics of art drawing and painting, also comprising the material selection, themes, metjods, techniques, and media. The study aimed at portraying the teachers' practices in selecting and applying materials, themes, methods, media and techniques in the teaching of arts in elementary school level in tangerang. The result of the study were: (1) The teaching materials of the arts subject in elementary schools which promoted students' creativity was materials of painting. (1) The themes of drawing and painting activities which promotes students' creativity were those related to the students' environment because the themes were easier to find than those of their own creation or of the teachers' or councelors' recommendations. (2) It was found that demonstration was the major method of drawing and painting activities which promoted students' creativity. (3) Media that were conventionally applied were water color, pastel crayon, oil maker, water maker. (4) The painting and drawing techniques applied by the students were still conventional, however few of them non nonventional.
