The idea of Asia as a key engine of global economic growth has become commonplace- so much so, indeed, that people seem to assume without much thought that this situation will continue indefinitely. It is true that Asia as a whole has maintained remarkably brisk growth ever since the 1960s. Within this broad region, new centers of economic dynamism have sprung up one after another.
