Isi artikelThe new system of medical care coverage for senior citizens aged 75 or over was ill received on its launch this spring. The government has been arguing that the new scheme should mean lower premium payment for almost all the “ later-stage” elderly. But why was it necessary in the first place to introduce a system applying only to those aged 75 or over? The reason is that medical care expenses for seniors have been growing rapidly, leading to fears that it might become impossible to sustain the public health insurance system as whole. Japan’s national expenditures on medical care come to Y33.1 trillion a year, of which Y9.5 trillion, or about 30%, is for those in the 75-or-over age group
