I am deeply grateful to those colleagues who took the time and trouble to read the target article and comment on it (published in SLR 25.2), and to the Editors for allowing me this opportunity to respond to the commentaries. It is clear from the range of different angles taken and views expressed that some commentators do not agree with each other, much less with me, in various respects. However, the cumulative impact of the comments provides a quite bracing (rather than bruising) impression of stock-taking that is good for the field and hopefully more or less what the Editors had in mind. In any case, I and the readers of Second Language Research have certainly benefited from the thoughtful contributions of each of my colleagues and their expert expansion on varied facets of the original article. Archibald (pp. 231–33) and Birdsong (pp. 235–43) both raise interesting and related points about uninterpretable features and perceptual salience. Archibald points out that the robustness of an input cue to signal the presence (and particular nature) of a feature varies crosslin-guistically: presumably, the stronger the phonetic cue, the greater the likelihood that a learner will be able to override the first language (L1) phonological filter to acquire a feature contrast that does not exist in the L1. This adds another dimension to the learning problem beyond simply
