Many studies have examined the original and revised versions of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). TAM specifies a pathway of technology acceptance, from external variables, to beliefs, to system usage. While TAM has been widely tested, few have investigated the role of external variables. We test TAM’s assumption that the ‘Perceived Ease-of-Use’ and ‘Perceived Usefulness’ constructs fully mediate external variables. Contrary to TAM, our survey results indicate external variables can have direct effects on usage behavior over and above their indirect effects mediated by TAM. TAM also appears significantly and consistently better at predicting frequency rather than volume of usage. |
