Functional dyspepsia is characterized by a history of at least 3 month of chronic dyspeptic symptoms in the absence of any relevant organic disease. This article discusses which patients with dyspepsia should be tested for Helicobacter pylory infection, given a trial of acid supression or have endoscopy performed, and how functional dyspepsia is diagnosed.
