Avascular necrosis of the femoral head in adults occurs most commonly as a result of alcohol or steroid usage. The condition is often bilateral, and careful screening and follow-up of the contralateral hip is almost mandatory. The best time of treatment is at the early stages, when the condition is asymptomatic.
