Isi artikel
Most of cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinoma (85-90%) and the rest are adenocarcinomas. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is preceded by precancerous lesion, which develop through several grades Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) 1-3. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted agent is ethiological in the patogenesis of CIN and SCC. Two genes in HPV called E6 and E7 genes, produce proteins that can attach themselves to p53 and Rb which are tumor suppressor proteins that regulate the cell cycle. So when this happens, the infected cells reproduce without any control, they develop permanent changes in their genetic structure that cannot be repaired and some may eventually turn into cancer cells. World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized HPV types 16 and 18 as carcinogenic agents for human.
