No doubt most language textbook writers have as an aim the preparation of the student for integration into the foreign culture. Yet a linguistically fluent but sociolinguistically inept person stands little chance of successful integration - and that is precisely the kind of person our language courses are producing. In order for textbook authors to achieve their goals, they must begin to address real sociolinguistic issues.
