Claudin Salmon, one of the few expert on Sino-Indonesian literature, writes about topict dealt by these Sino-Indonesian writers. Most of them were based in Java, unlike the indigeneous writers who were based in Sumatra. They wrote not only problems in their regions, but also outside their regions, even outside Java. This is in contrast with the indigeneous writers, who wrote about their regions, especially about changes that were brought about by the process of modernization coming from the West.
