This is a reaction to Arief Budiman's article: "Faktor-faktor yang menghambat bagi kemungkinan munculnya teori ilmu sosial alternatif", published in Kritis, July 1986. The author question Arief's statement that the existing social theories have failed to deal with reality. What is meant by "the existing social theories"? Are there only two, the psychological and structural theories? If there are more, Arief has not dealth with them adequately. The author then discussed the weakness of the Indonesian scientists in dealing with theory. Our scientists are too empirical in their research. Thus, they fail to invent new theory.
