Isi artikel
We can identify two major views of language, Ariel Heryanto argues. They are what he calls the "Universalists" and "contextualists". In the case of contemporary Indonesia, Ariel Heryanto sees the prevailing dominance of the universalists' view, characterized by its a historical perspective of and basic assumptions about the nature and social workings of language. This dominant view is responsible for the popular adoption of the English aphorism "what's in a name?", as well as the idea that language is essentially a (neutral) tool for communication. Such an idea has neither roots, nor counterpart in the indigeneous tradition of the Indonesian communities.
