Isi artikel
In this essay, Kemasang demonstrated how Dutch merchantilism destroyed the hitherto well-established political-economy in insular Southeast Asia, and the early growth of a domestic bourgeoisie in the colony. This was done primarily by means of violent military aggression, as well as the "devide and rule" strategy. The Dutch could only have succeeded in their efforts with adequate alliances, which they could find with virtually no difficulties were recruited in the colonial military forces. Inhabitants of Chinese descent in Java were chosen for the colonial economic expansion, and simultaneously segregated from the rest of the population to avoid unexpected alliance with each other. Furthermore, the segregation created antagonism between the Chinese and the indigeneous population.
