Apart from discussions whether grammar should be taught explicitly or not, English Department, Faculty of Education, Atma Jaya Catholic University Jakarta offers stages of grammar course (covering English Structure I to IV and English Syntax). Among those stages, Passive Voice is highlighted in Structure III class where they are expected to be able to construct and use passive structure in sentences or paragraphs; also to identify passive with modals, modal-like expressions, causative, and participial adjectives. This circumstance is in accordance to a notion that sentence structure learning and acquisition enhance learners’ proficiency and accuracy as well as facilitating the internalization of syntactic system which supplement the development of students’ fluency communicating in English (Hinkel & Fotos, 2002, p. 10). Additionally, an understanding of why or when to use a particular grammar form should be possessed by ESL/EFL training teachers so as to avoid giving easy answers that might contribute to the confusion of the students they teach in the future (Larsen-Freeman, 2002, p. 107). |
