Mechanistic explanations of memory identify its underlying mechanisms; functional explanations identify the everyday uses that those mechanisms subserve. Banaji and Crowder (1989) argued that only the former is an appropriate objective of memory research. Bruce claims that both types of explanation are scientific Functional explanations complement a mechanistic analysis of memory, recognize the individual differences that are the raw material of psychology, and draw on the natural contexts in which memory operates.
