Language is a system of communicating consisting of sounds, words and grammar or the system of communication used by the people of a particular country/profession. (Cambridge Advance Learner’s Dictionary). In addition, language can also be defined as an integral part of human behaviour (Bonvillain, 2003, p.1). People who live in a particular country communicate with each other using the same language that exists in that country; for instance, Indonesians use Indonesian, Chinese use Mandarin and Koreans use Korean. However, when they want to communicate with other people from other countries, they have to use another language that can be understood by the others. In this case, they use English. This makes English become an international language. Denning and Leben stated that English is the world’s most important language today. It is the mother tongue of several hundred million people (Denning and Leben, 1995, p.3). |
