Breast cancer often causes death because most patients present in advanced stages of cancer so that treatment is often done merely to improve the quality of life of patients without hope of recovery. In the case of this paper we discuss the role of phytoestrogens in the prevention of breast cancer. Phytoestrogens are polyphenol compounds that have a similarity with 17ß-estradiol thus might be able to prevent or treat breast cancer associated with the regulation of 17ß-estradiol. We use literature review as our writing method. Some research results indicate the role of phytoestrogens in breast cancer risk reduction especially in postmenopausal women which was found in women in Asia, Singapore, France, and Brazil who consume phytoestrogens in certain levels. Phytoestrogens consumption was also lower breast cancer recurrence in women in the United States. An in vitro studies also support the results of these studies. However, the exact mechanism of phytoestrogens at biomolecular level in regard with ER still needs further researches as there are differences in many studies. We have not found the right dosage of phytoestrogen to effectively prevent breast cancer and the adverse effects of it. Futher studies could still be required to fully understand the role of phytoestrogens in the prevention of breast cancer, especially regarding dosage and side effects of phytoestrogens.
