Isi artikelThe dynamics of local politics has entered a new phase in Indonesia. Since 2004, people at localities and provincies has exercised their rights in electing their leaders, i.e. governor, mayor, or regent. However, this direct electoral mechanism has raised a question either it would progress or hinder the process of democracy at local levels. Since some aspects from the past such as domination of certain political elites, the use of money or materials in exchanges of votes, and minimal knowledge of voters about the future candidates, also the form addition to these, many still doubt since some local people have certain characters such values and principle of democracy, as diamond (1999) notes, including cooperation, moderation, accommodation and bargaining. Neverthless, the practiceof direct election for local executives or also called Pilkada langsung has shown high participation of public. Though they were some frauds, people know which leaders to elect and know how to behave in the electoral process. In sum, the article found Pilkada langsung advances local democracy.
