Isi artikel
Employing a labour systems approach, this article examines the consequences of the Asian financial crisis of 1997-99 for workers in Thailand. It is argued that while the immediate outcome of the crisis was to accelerate liberalising economic reforms it longer term effect was to politicise workers and other popular sector groups and thus create ever stronger resistance to those same reforms and to the corporate labour policies they encouraged. In some cases, as in the state enterprise sector, the reforms have been effectively stalled. More often broader economic structural and political changes have blunted protest. But in all cases, government policy and corporate strategies must not take social and labour considerations into account.
