Methylotrophic bacteria are aerobic bacteria that utilize one-carbon compounds, as well as a wide range of multi-carbon substrates as their source of carbon and energy. The human feet are known as sources of methylated sulfides, which are produced by other microflora. Methylated sulfides could be oxidized by methylotrophic bacteria, which may result in odor reduction in human foot. In this study, from 55 respondents we obtained a total of 21 methylotrophic isolates from feet. These isolates were identified with biochemical assays: oxidase, catalase test, and Gram staining assay. The presence of mxaF gene of methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) was detected by PCR using specific primers. The activity of MDH was also determined. From the total of 21 isolates obtained from human feet, only 15 of them showed MDH activity. The isolates with the highest total activity from this habitats will be further investigated in the future. |
