My assignment was to discuss the future of the demography of aging as it affects and is reflected by the family. The contributors to this symposium resisted the temptation to predict the future, in large part, I think, because all demographers remember both the dire predictions of population decline made by members of our profession in the 1930s and 1940s and the egg of the subsequent baby boom on our professional faces. This negative experience has left us with a good deal of confidence in our ability to project the future but little confidence in our ability to predict it.
