Isi artikel
Some newly emerging viral lung infections have the potential to cause large outbreaks of severe respiratory disease amongst humans. The authors discuss infection by influenza A (H5N1), SARS and hantavirus. The H5N1 subtype of avian influenza (bird flu) has crossed the species barrier and now causes severe illness in humans. First seen in China in 2002, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is transmitted between humans, and clusters have been seen. Hantavirus (Sin Nombre) is an emerging cause of viral lung disease. Many confirmed cases had contact with rodents (the major host of hantaviruses). In all three diseases, patients require supportive care and treatment.
