Isi artikelAlthough debate continues over how best to interpret available data, scholars now generally agree that Classical Roman Italy (2nd century BCE-5th century CE) was characterized by high mortality (an average life expectancy at birth of 20-25 years) and high fertility (on average at least 6 children per woman). The latter was facilitated by a young age at first marriage for women (age 20 or younger), universal marriage, an absence of contraception during marriage, and relatively brief durations of breastfeeding (Scheidel 2001: Caldwell 2004).
