Cushing's disease is a form of Cushing's syndrome that is caused by an excess of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) secretion form a pituitary adenoma. The elevated ACTH in turn stimulates the adrenal glands to produce excess cortisol. It is this hypercortisolaemia that affects almost all of the organ systems, producing the myriad of signs and symptoms called Cushing's syndrome.
