Abstract
Psychology as a science of mind and (human) behaviour is a product of the West accompanying their interaction with the Third World countries .Nevertheless it has gain much prominence as a study field at Indonesian universities in the last decade . Many research has been done but tend to be imitative in its approach and problem selection with what was developed in the West . The way of thinking is dominated by Western thought which regards phenomena distinctly as universal , beyond time and place . It is unable to apply the findings properly to a particular local situations existing in its own tradition within the context of its social values . Alatas has called this as a captive mind (Alatas ,1974 in Seah Chee-Meow 1977 : 77 - 93 ) ; Mahbubani even ask provocatively through his book 'Can Asian Think ?' ( 2004 ) ; Spencer-Rodgers , Williams and Peng argued that Asian specific folk beliefs of knowing affect how Asians , including Asians social psychologists percieve and understand themselves and their environments ( 2007 : 261 -272 ) . These views shows that as social scientist we should find concepts and methods suitable to the local situation within our own specific problems in a scientific manner . For this I refrain myself to only describe and conceptualizing it beyond thoughts on the possibility of a collaborative research agenda as discussed in this workshop.
