Since English is an international language, Indonesian students have to learn it as their foreign language. Elementary school students, junior high school students, high school students, even college and university students have English as one of their subjects. Besides learning listening, speaking, reading and writing, the students have to learn pronunciation, grammar, and of course, vocabulary. According to Horwitz (1988) quoted in Schmitt and McCarthy (2000, p.102), “The most important part of learning a foreign language is learning vocabulary.” There are some methods in learning English because English teachers and linguists tend to improve students’ ability and use the most suitable method during learning process. The methods from the 1950s and 1980s, for instance, are Audiolingual Method, The Silent Way, The Natural Approach, Total Physical Response, and Cooperative language learning. |
