Learning English is believed to be a success when it starts from the early age, kindergarten or elementary school. Unfortunately, teaching this age group has not fully taken into account this early age, thus lessening potential benefits of the age. Teaching is often put at stake since it might not accord with the children’s learning nature. For example, it is common to witness teaching paradigms which put the emphasis on grammar as merely sets of rules. It is contradictory with the nature of children that are likely to focus on meaning. Owing to this problem, teachers should find effective ways to convey grammar and meaning at the same time. It is at this juncture that the notion of focus on form could offer an alternative approach to teach grammar and meaning to the children. Long’s (1991) defined focus on form as an incidental attempt to focus learners’ attention to any linguistic element in contexts while engaging in meaning-focused interaction. |
