Mastering the skill of speaking English is not easy. Adult learners often find some difficulties when they are using a new language. According to Brown (2000), the learners couldn’t easily communicate their ideas or opinions through a new language since there are some differences in culture, way of thinking, feeling and acting. Moreover, as stated by Guiora in Geocities (2000) explains that the difficulties many adult learners encounter in second language learning are caused by their ego or identity that is fixed and steady to their first language. Language ego is defined by Guiora (1972a) and Ehrman (1996) in Brown (2000), as “the very personal, egoistic nature of second language acquisition” (p.147). It influences one’s success in mastering a second language mainly because learning a new language involves one’s language ego. |
