Abstract
Mrs. Dalloway is one of Virginia Woolf’s novels, which published in 1925. This novel is quite unique for the author uses an uncommon technique in delivering the story. It is very interesting indeed. Virginia is one of the greatest novelists in the
twentieth century. Influenced by the works of Marcel Praust, a French writer, and James Joyce, an Irish writer, Virginia applies the stream of consciousness literary technique, which conveyed inner life. This uncommon technique could be seen
successfully utilized in Mrs. Dalloway (Kennedy, 1979). Mrs. Dalloway (1925) was the first novel in which Virginia Woolf applied successfully the stream of consciousness. Through this technique, Virginia emphasized patterns of consciousness rather than sequences of events in the external world. Therefore, she was able to reveal the major character, Clarissa. Mrs. Dalloway, taking place in the middle of June in London after the war, centered on a woman named Clarissa. She was about to throw a party in that evening. The whole story went about her life in just one day. During the whole day, Clarissa’s and other characters’ minds were explored.
