Isi artikelAlasdair MacIntyre's classic book After Virtue (1984) serves as the foundation for this essay. While the book has much to offer in its explication of virtue ethics and its critique of current society, I wish to respond critically to its ardent condemnation of the manager. I will briefly outline MacIntyre's perspective on the manager. My criticism will contain two parts. First, I will argue that MacIntyre's unified view of the manager is inconsistent with his position on the nature of predictability in human interaction. Second, I will develop and apply MacIntyre's theory of practice to managerial work. My conclusion is that MacIntyre's view of the manager is clouded by his normative bias against the economic sphere. Management can constitute a practice, and can thus appropriately be considered from a virtue ethics perspective. I will very briefly discuss the application of virtue ethics to managerial practice, although it is not my intent to expand on this topic in depth. A comprehensive discussion of virtue ethics in business is available elsewhere (see for example Solomon, 1992).
