Abstract
Basic Kanji is a graphical kanji learning tool originally designed to provide necessary information about each
kanji. It takes into consideration the target audience, autonomous learners, by including features that may
promote the learners use of strategies. The software displays kanji compounds in correct stroke order,
meanings with audio pronunciations as well as a number of their usages to provide autonomous learners with
tools for studying on their own without formal instruction. Experimental evaluation that used the Motivated
Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, indicated significant improvements in students' motivation and
autonomous language learning strategies.
