Abstract
Under the guidance of constructivism and autonomous learning theory, the teaching experiment is
designed and conducted to compare the teaching effectiveness of the network-based multimedia autonomous
teaching and learning model with that of the traditional one. Before the experiment, two groups of freshmen from
the same English level class were chosen and divided into the experimental group and the control group. The
network-based multimedia autonomous teaching and learning model was conducted in the experimental group,
while the traditional one in the control group from the first semester to the third semester. After the experiment,
SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) was employed to analyze the scores of the three final exams.
The statistics shows that students from the experimental group have significantly improved their English
competence as well as their interest in English learning. In addition, the author conducted research with
questionnaires and interviews among students and found that the new teaching and learning model could cater for
most individual needs effectively in their English learning, which further proves the effectiveness of
network-based multimedia teaching model in the development of students’ autonomy in English learning.
