Abstract
The research of legibility and text readability on-screen text, especially on Indonesian language text, were caused by the increase of computer use trend in nowadays people’s daily activity, such in working, studying, or any other frivolous activities. Integrated with internet technology, computer use become higher than before. Basically, computer is a diplaying device. In general, the computer’s screen display texts and pictures. Text, in this case was called as on-screen text, is the most dominant
component on computer’s screen. The objective of this research is to determine the most comfortable text’s configuration in on-screen reading activity. Comfort in reading were indicated from on-screen text legibility and readability aspects. On-screen text
configuration with ideal legibility and readability will provide the audience a comfort reading experience, particularly reading from computer’s screen.
The primary matter in this research is that factors, consist of sans serif font type, font size, line spacing, and colour contrast between the text and the background, give some different effects for every factor’s level. The on-screen text legibility and readability determined by analyzing the effect of those different factors to the time response. Shorter time responses indicate the higher legibility and readability on the certain on-screen text
configuration. This research used 100 respondents that still studying in the elementary school.
Specifically, criterias of the respondents are 4th until 6th grade pupils and their familiarity on using computer. The experiment was supported by a software-based program named Fisura Quicklick. This program looks like a finding words games program. The respondents were asked to find a certain word from a group of words, which is had been set on a certain configuration. There are 48 configurations that diplayed randomly on
this program.
The primary data in this research is the time’s data that obtained from Fisura Quicklick program. This data contains the time response from all configuration of each respondent. The secondary data obtained from the respondent’s personal preference questionnaire. Data tabulation processed with Minitab 13.1 software. The solution was obtained from using ANOVA method, equipped with some clustering on the time response data.
The final solution that given in the end of this research is the most ideal configuration, which mean it is the best configuration with best legibility and readability.
