Background: the number of reported cases on drug abuse has increased dramatically by about 58% per year. Many IDUs share needles, do not keep the needles sterile, and vulnerable for HIV/AIDS. The reported number of HIV/AIDS among IDUs in Indonesia increased dramatically; Jakarta contributes the most. Development of rehabilitation centers is important to help IDUs quit from drugs. The study attempts to describe the different patterns between those visiting and not visiting rehabilitaton centers, and find problems of rehabilitaton centers from the users perspectives. Methods: a two year longitudinal study in Jakarta greater area. Participants were drug users selected by backgrounds. There were two groups: never been in rehabilitation center and have been in there. After baseline interview, participants were followed up every four months for two years. Results: 10 participants have been in rehabilitation centers at least once and 24 never been there. During study, participants of both groups have never been in rehabilitation centers but stayed using drugs. Conclusions: No different behavioral pattern between the two groups. There was a stigma that rehabilitation center does little in changing behavior of drug users. The high cost of rehabilitation program makes IDUs reluctant to take the program. |
