Abstract
This research is objected to study influential factors in improving employees of PT. Sadikun Niagamas Raya’s work motivation and discipline. One of the factors is superior’s leadership style at manager level. Leadership style variable is conditioned as free variable, while employee’s work motivation and discipline is conditioned as bound variable. The research population is employees of PT. Sadikun Niagamas Raya head office, Jakarta. Sampling technique applied is purposive sampling classified as nonprobability sampling technique where the sample is selected strictly in such way that relevant with the research plan. Correlation to this research is that the writer carries out research on leadership style among managers, and then the samples are taken from employees at supervisor and staff levels. Data collecting method is by spreading valid and reliable questioners. This research analyzes the data descriptively and statistically. Taking path-goal leadership theory, then leadership style is divided into four categories: directive style, participative style, supportive style and goal-oriented style. Generally, managers’ leadership style at PT. Sadikun Niagamas Raya classified as sound. The same goes for employees’ work motivation and discipline, while statistical analysis tests two hypotheses. Firstly, that there is significant impact (correlation) between leadership style and employee’s work motivation. Secondly, is to prove significant impact against employee’s discipline. It indicates that application of appropriate leadership style would improve employee’s work motivation and discipline. In the other side, if the leadership style applied against subordinates is neither appropriate and nor well acceptable, then it would dampen employee’s motivation for work and discipline. Principally, there is no absolutely good/poor leadership style. It is in the reason that leadership style is affected by factors such as objective, followers (subordinates), organization, leader characters itself, and the existing situation. In connection with that matter, I recommend to carry out periodic evaluation to managers’ performance against their subordinates, to organize leadership and managerial skill for supporting managers’ profession as well as to carry out survey on subordinate’s valuation against their managers. Therefore, company’s initial objectives could be achieved due to the support of their managers’ effective leadership style and highly-motivated and disciplined employees.
