Welcome to this special issue of Simulation: Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International on ‘Principles of advanced and distributed simulation’, incorporating extended versions of a few of the best-rated publications appearing in the proceedings of the 21st International Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS 2007). The articles in this issue represent the latest research in four different application areas of parallel simulation, namely physical sciences, transportation networks, telecommunication networks, and digital hardware. They also serve to highlight four distinct goals: accuracy and speed, automated assembly and interoperability, interface of real systems to simulations, and parallel domain decomposition for balanced loading.
