Isi artikelLiving as we do in an increasingly globalised world means, politically, that power is moving both beyond the nation state and to levels below it. Culturally, although it means that we have more choice, those choices also seem to be standardising. Economically, it means that the free-market nation draws nation states into a globally competitive contest. Demographically, it means that many nation states are experiencing declining tax revenues brought about by ageing populations. Educationally, it means understanding these issues and their effects and providing future generations with the values, skills and attitudes to cope with them. I have argued (Bottery, 2004) that such changes generate greater control and standardisation, as well as greater flexibility and fragmentation; and that, for educators, this will result in challenges to personal and political identities, to the terms of knowledge and meaning and to the importance of trust.
