The study is based upon research carried out during 2001–2, funded by the Nuffield Foundation and reported in Lumby and Briggs et al (2002), which sought to explore the role of sixth form colleges; to examine the impact of government policy upon them since 1993, and to analyse the colleges’ management of response to changes. Part One of this article considered the curriculum, culture and growth of the sector.
