Isi artikelUnderstanding how beginning principals were able to locate and use different sources of role learning was the basis of the research study entitled “Learning the role:Through the eyes of beginning principals” (O’Mahony, 2002). What is described here are findings presented through the eyes of those living through the experience as first year principals in the role in the state of Victoria, Australia. I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to the seven interviewees:Andrea, Des, James,Kay, Kris, Marisa and Madeline (the names have been changed to maintain anonymity) who have allowed me to capture and present their views in this research. What emerged from this study was the extent that newcomers to the principalship often felt forced to become self-dependent and self-directive in learning their role.
