Isi artikelIn Fred Zinneman’s 1966 classic Academy Award “Best Picture”Winner, “A Man for All Seasons”, Paul Scofield plays the quiet, self-assured,Thomas More, Henry the VIII’s Lord Chancellor. More is a leader who attempts to stick to his religious and political beliefs under unrelenting pressure from a king whom he fears and admires simultaneously. Many school principals in the post-millennium era are experiencing a similar situation (though, luckily with less sinister consequences for them). Crushed between national policies that change quite often, attempting to keep school and staff solidarity, upholding school values and traditions whilst implementing new initiatives, they often feel like men and women for all seasons. This study presents a critical look at school leadership and management theories in relation to school reform (Gibton, 2002). The aim of the study was to use empirical research inside 49 English and Israeli school to see whether various leadership theories, beginning in the Sixties and ending in the Nineties, are valid in studying educational leaders in times of educational reform.
