Following recent research into the role of the deputy head (Kerry 2000) I was asked to lead some training for the primary and special school deputy heads in a London Borough. My previous work had suggested that, especially in the first few weeks of deputy headship, it was not uncommon for deputies to face critical events. How they handled these might have a considerable effect on their future activity in the post.
