From 1984 to 199°, as part of a federal land claims case, San Juan Paiute elders and attorneys representing the San Juan Paiute Tribe, the Hopi Tribe, and the Navajo Tribe took part in a series of depositions and finally a trial in federal district court. This article examines deposition and trial testimony in order to understand the cultural, linguistic, and communicative style dimensions of the problems that arose during this intercultural communicative experience.
