The importance of the subject leader’s management role has been formally acknowledged by the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) with the publication of the National Standards for Subject Leaders (TTA,1998). These standards are part of a much wider initiative to establish a professional development framework for teachers. The standards define both the nature and the scope of a subject leader’s role. In doing so they provide the basis for evaluating and creating processes of professional development.
