Isi artikelMainstream science in the medieval and the Elizabethan periods was dominated by an unquestioning belief in alchemy and an obsessive search for the philosopher’s stone that would turn base metal into gold. In the late 20th century something similar appeared to be happening with the phenomenon of school effectiveness research (Teddlie and Reynolds, 2000). Its interest for national schooling policy makers lay in the assumption that researchers would identify the essential features of effective schools and that these could then be replicated in schools and classrooms across the globe, irrespective of structural issues, local culture, history, politics and socio-economic circumstances.
