The main purpose of principal performance appraisal in New Zealand is the accountability of the principal to the board of trustees. It is set in an environment of self managing schools where the principal is deemed to be the chief executive officer of the board of trustees and is responsible for carrying out board policy whilst undertaking day to day management of the school. Subsidiary purposes of this appraisal are: self-improvement for the principal and school improvement.
