Isi artikelThis article concentrates on teachers’ pay in the context of the Government’s proposals for performance management. There is, at the heart of current debate, the issue of threshold payments and performance related pay. It is not clear at this stage (May 2000) how many teachers will apply for the threshold this year. There are up to 250,000 who could do so. Thousands of individual judgements about the complexity of the application process and estimates of the likelihood of success will determine how many apply. It will also be related to the teachers’ perception of their own professionalism. The unions are now providing high quality advice on how to apply for the threshold whilst still challenging either the detail or the principle. I would estimate over 150,000 will apply
