Recent official documentation stresses the importance of subject leadership in schools. OfSTED for example, in citing examples of good practice stresses the importance of leadership rather than administration, and the Teacher Training Agency spells this out in terms of monitoring and evaluating of the work of all teachers in a subject area. During the past year a research team in the department of education at Keele University has been investigating the roles, responsibilities and routines of subject leaders.
