Isi artikelLinda Curtis is the headteacher of a special school for students with severe learning difficulties. Since 1994 she has been investigating how she has worked within a consortium of headteachers from 13 special schools to manage change during a turbulent period of unprecedented social and educational change. Her action research seeks to change policy and practice across an LEA, and through this to influence the future of special education on a global scale. This is an ambitious project, and Linda has only reported the interim findings to date. In this context it is worth highlighting Kemmis and Carr’s influential definition of action research. This focused on the idea of improving the rationality and justice of an individual’s practices, their understanding of these practices, and the situations in which the practices were carried out. Linda’s research provides one of the very few examples of action research that is intended to influence policy and improve situations that go beyond single institutions.
