This article presents some of the findings of a small scale study into the leadership and governance of effective schools in England. Four researchers set out to examine the main features of leadership and governance in seven effective schools; the headteacher, chair/vice chair of governors, a senior manager and wherever possible a ’link’ education officer were interviewed in each of the schools. Four secondary schools, two infant schools and one primary school were studied. Ofsted described the participating schools either as:
