Isi artikelSome 14,000 of the 22,000 primary and secondary schools in England are classified as ‘Community Schools,’ these schools would have been referred to as ‘local authority’ schools in the recent past, being under the guidance of LEAs.The term ‘state’ school is used rarely in England. Since 1988 such schools have been largely autonomous since the Conservative government of the day introduced legislation that ensured much of the decision-making was delegated to individual schools. LEAs were required by law to delegate much of their power and funding to the board of governors of each school. The funding of each school became largely dependant [at least 80 per cent] on the number of pupils it attracted. Parents were encouraged to select the school of their choice using published inspection reports and performance data; a quasi-market was created.
